Showdown Value

Showdown value describes a hand good enough to sometimes win if the pot reaches showdown, but too weak to bet for value or turn into a bluff — think middle pair or ace-high. These hands usually prefer to check and realize their equity cheaply.

Recognizing showdown value avoids two classic mistakes: betting a hand that only worse hands fold and better hands call, and bluffing away a hand that could have won by checking. Against calling stations, thin value beats bluffing — but a hand with only showdown value should usually just check.
