Set Mining
Calling before the flop with a small pocket pair hoping to flop a set and win a big pot.
Set mining is calling a raise with a small or medium pocket pair for the main purpose of flopping a set (three of a kind), which happens about one time in eight. When you miss, you give up cheaply; when you hit, you have a disguised monster that stacks overpairs and top pair.
The math only works with the right implied odds: deep enough stacks and an opponent who pays you off when you hit. A common rule of thumb is being able to win at least 10-15 times the amount you call. See our guide to pocket pairs and set mining.
