A check-raise is checking with the intention of raising after an opponent bets. It can be a powerful value play, letting you build a big pot with a strong hand, or a bluff that represents even more strength.
From passive, straightforward opponents, a river check-raise is almost always the top of their range, so treat it with respect and fold marginal hands. From aggressive players who bet too much, check-raising is a great way to trap their bluffs.
