Bluff

A bluff is a bet or raise designed to make a better hand fold. For a bluff to profit, your opponent has to fold often enough to cover the times you get called and lose.

That is why player type matters so much: bluffing works against players who fold too often and is close to lighting money on fire against calling stations who never fold. A good bluff also tells a believable story about the hand you are representing.
